Rafael Eduardo "Eddie" Echeverria, 56, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, due to a car accident. Services will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Thomas More University Parish in Norman. Mr. Echeverria was born May 31, 1948, in Bogota, Colombia, to Rafael and Beatriz Echeverria Barrera. His family moved in 1967 to Norman. He graduated from Norman High School in 1969. He attended Oscar Rose Junior College in Midwest City from 1976-78. He graduated in 1983 with a bachelor of business administration from the University of Oklahoma. He was a certified and licensed respiratory therapy technician with more than 25 years experience in providing all aspects of respiratory therapy care, primarily in Adult Acute Critical Care, Emergency Room and Code Blue situations and Neonatal Critical Care. He has worked at Saint Anthony's Hospital, Integris Baptist Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital and until present at Grady Memorial Hospital in Chickasha. He worked at various hospitals in Oklahoma through RSSJ Medical Staffing. He married Marie Czebatul in 1992. Their son, Alexander Rafael Echeverria, was born April 20, 1992. Mr. Echeverria became a United States citizen in 1993. Mr. Echeverria dedicated his life to his son, Alexander. Family members say he was a responsible and loving father. He enjoyed attending Alexander's sport events, concerts and other activities. He enjoyed Latin music, dancing, camping, reading, movies and travel. Family members say he was a good friend to many and will be dearly missed. Mr. Echeverria was preceded in death by his parents, Rafael and Beatriz Echeverria Barrera and brother, Nelson F. Echeverria. Mr. Echeverria is survived by his son, Alexander Echeverria of Norman; brothers, Camilo H. Echeverria of Bogota and Hernan V. Echeverria of Norman; sisters, Iris Echeverria and Ana Roa of Bogota; niece, Andrea Roa of Bogota; nephew, Juan Pablo Roa of Bogota; and Marie Echeverria and stepson, Adam Gutierrez of Norman. Memorial contributions for Mr. Echeverria's son, Alexander Echeverria, may be sent to P.O. Box 5836, Norman, OK 73070.

I remember when Eduardo first showed up at Norman High. I was a bit in awe of someone from another country. Back then you just didn't meet people like him; not in Norman, Oklahoma. He was always very polite; always smiling.
